Why This Book

Everything a graduate student
needs to succeed with AI

01

Stage-by-Stage Guidance

Covers the full thesis lifecycle — topic selection, literature review, methodology, results writing, defense, and converting research into publications.

02

300 Ready-to-Use Prompts

A curated package of 300 prompts across 15 categories, adaptable for every thesis stage: brainstorming, synthesis, editing, defense prep, and more.

03

Ethics-First Approach

Rigorous guidance on academic integrity and responsible AI use, aligned with major university and publisher policies so your scholarship stays authentically yours.

04

Cross-Discipline Mini-Cases

Rich annotated dialogues drawn from Urban Planning, Engineering, and Social Sciences — showing how the same principles adapt across different research contexts.

05

AI as Co-Thinking Partner

Treats ChatGPT as an intellectual accelerator, not a ghostwriter. Every chapter reinforces that the student remains the author, thinker, and scholar.

06

Defense & Publication Ready

Mock defense scripts, examiner Q&A preparation, and a full thesis-to-publication pipeline turning your research into journal articles and policy briefs.

Table of Contents

Thirteen chapters.
One complete journey.

Each chapter combines conceptual guidance, prompt templates, annotated student–AI dialogues, mini-cases drawn from three disciplines, and practical checklists.

About the Author

Prof. Ibrahim Hegazy

Professor Ibrahim Hegazy is a researcher and academic consultant affiliated with Afaaq Research & Studies (Evidence-Based Studies & Consulting). His work focuses on bridging research methodology and emerging technology for graduate scholars across the MENA region.

This book grew out of direct observation of how graduate students actually use AI tools in their thesis work — and the gap between that practice and the responsible, effective guidance available to them. It is shaped by real student questions, real experiments, and the academic communities at universities across the MENA region.

The Golden Prompt
PhD Proposal Framework

I am developing a PhD research proposal in the field of [Your Field]. The tentative research topic is: "Your Research Topic"

Please develop a rigorously structured and academically coherent doctoral research framework that includes the following components in sequence:

1️⃣

Scholarly Introduction to the Topic

Write a concise but analytically grounded introduction (800–1200 words) that:

  • Situates the topic within global academic debates.
  • Clarifies the policy or practical relevance (if applicable).
  • Identifies emerging tensions, contradictions, or gaps.
  • Establishes the research significance.
  • Concludes with a clear transition toward the research problem.

Avoid general descriptions. Ensure conceptual positioning.

2️⃣

Research Problem

Formulate:

  • A clearly articulated structural research problem.
  • Identify whether the gap is theoretical, methodological, institutional, policy-related, or contextual.
  • Demonstrate why the problem is academically and practically significant.
3️⃣

Analytical Problem Statement

Write one concise, well-structured paragraph that synthesizes:

  • The core gap.
  • Its implications.
  • The necessity of investigation.

Avoid vague wording. Use precise academic terminology.

4️⃣

Main Research Question

Formulate:

  • One strategic-level research question.
  • It must not be operational or methodological.
  • It must reflect analytical depth and systemic thinking.
5️⃣

Research Aim

Develop:

  • A precise aim that directly answers the main research question.
  • It must reflect analytical direction and intended contribution.
  • It should not simply restate the question.
6️⃣

Research Objectives

Formulate 3–5 logically sequenced objectives following this progression:

Theory → Comparative/Analytical Evaluation → Contextual Diagnosis → Model/Framework Development → Evaluation/Validation

Each objective must:

  • Be action-oriented (critically analyze, assess, evaluate, develop, etc.).
  • Avoid redundancy.
  • Represent a distinct research task.
7️⃣

Sub-Research Questions

Under each objective, develop aligned sub-questions that:

  • Operationalize the objective analytically.
  • Avoid repeating the objective wording.
  • Move beyond descriptive "what is" questions.
  • Emphasize how, why, under what conditions, to what extent.

Ensure direct vertical alignment:

Main Question Aim Objectives Sub-Questions
8️⃣

Theoretical Positioning

Briefly identify:

  • The theoretical lens or conceptual foundation.
  • The epistemological orientation (e.g., evaluative, explanatory, design-oriented, governance analysis).
  • The anticipated type of contribution (model, index, institutional framework, policy tool, etc.).
9️⃣

Suggested Thesis Structure and Chapter Outline

Propose a coherent PhD thesis structure including:

Chapter 1Introduction and Research Framework
Chapter 2Literature Review and Theoretical Foundations
Chapter 3Conceptual Framework and Analytical Model
Chapter 4Research Methodology
Chapter 5Comparative / Empirical Analysis
Chapter 6Contextual Diagnosis
Chapter 7Model Development / Framework Proposal
Chapter 8Validation / Evaluation
Chapter 9Discussion and Theoretical Contribution
Chapter 10Conclusions and Policy Implications

For each chapter: provide the proper key subsections, ensure alignment with objectives and sub-questions, and show methodological progression.

🔎

Mandatory Academic Requirements

  • Use analytical language.
  • Avoid vague terms such as "improve," "appropriate," or "facilitate" unless defined.
  • Eliminate repetition.
  • Maintain vertical logical coherence.
  • Reflect PhD-level critical positioning.
  • Ensure the research gap is explicit and defensible.
  • Structure the output in clear academic headings.
